Budget tips for buying and maintaining a car
How old are you? Seventeen? Eighteen? Like me, you probably spent time poring over the cars in magazines when you were younger, imagining the day you would be old enough to drive, and agonizing over the dilemma of a first car: Ford GT40, or Lamborghini Murcielago? Yes, it certainly was a tough choice, but now the time comes to actually buy a first car it seems there is a different choice - spend maybe a couple of thousand on a nice, newish car and live in arrears for the next few years, or pick up that awesome 1989 Mitsubishi Colt around the corner, with its fabulous bodywork, affixed with fetching sticky tape (you think I'm joking?).
That is of course only the beginning - there is then the insurance, which in most cases is more expensive than the car. even the self-dubbed "Young People's Insurers" will charge you on the stereotypical view that young drivers are bad drivers. It is a sad fact that the minority make it expensive for the majority.
Then of course there is the maintenance and running costs of the car, which seem to get higher and higher all the time thanks to the rising costs of fuel, and the taxes imposed to encourage people to use their cars less - all very well, but what of the young people who simply want to build up a no-claims bonus!?
So what is my suggestion? Simple. Save yourself the huge cost of buying a car and running it, and the planet, and buy yourself a bus pass. For the other times where you can't walk to your destination or take a bus, hire a car! It's going to save you a boatload of money and not only that you will be saving precious grams of carbon dioxide from filling the atmosphere.
You'll thank me when the world is saved from climate disaster!
