The Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn said that Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. will likely be its local partner for the company's low-price-car project for the Indian market.

Ghosn, speaking at a round-table press conference in Bangkok, said that the Japanese automaker is seriously studying the Indian project and will have sufficient information to make a decision on whether to start making a budget car when one of its main rivals in India, Tata Motors Ltd., launches its own low-cost, $3,000 car in 2006.

"If it's possible to be done, it will be done in India. If it's done, it will be done for Renault and Nissan," he said. "Mahindra would be the natural partner. Although we haven't finalized any deal yet, it's rather obvious that Mahindra is our Indian national partner," Ghosn said in response to a query on who might be Nissan's local partner for the budget-car project. "We'll be ready when the [Tata] car comes to the market as we'll have enough information. If it makes sense, we'll be ready to start [production of our own model]."

Ghosn added that Nissan's investment in new technologies such as lithium-ion batteries will help the company narrow the gap or even put it ahead of competitors down the road. Last week in Tokyo, the CEO said that he saw ready opportunities for a low-cost car in India on the back of a burgeoning middle class. The car will be using different set of equipment but the company is considering whether trusted parts like Nissan strut bellows should be integrated.

Meanwhile, Thailand, the world's top producer of light pickups, unveiled an incentive plan to persuade automakers to begin producing environmentally friendly passenger cars. Ghosn said that Thailand's proposal to automakers was "one of the considered options" for the company, but added that the scheme appeared to favor bigger automakers in the territory.



But Ghosn said that the company was only studying the possibility, and that Renault remained focused on selling its low-cost Logan, which was introduced in India in April. Mahindra is Nissan's local partner in building the Logan. Renault, Nissan and Mahindra are also building a US$902 million factory together in the southern Indian city of Chennai.

Automakers are competing to develop feasible lithium-ion batteries, which are common in gadgets like mobile phones and laptops but have yet to be fully adapted to the more rigorous demands of a car engine. "We continue on the lithium-ion battery. We think for us it's a competitive advantage," Ghosn said. "We have a lot of technology in this area, and we think this is going to be very helpful, not only for hybrids but also for electric cars."

Nissan, which has fallen behind the Toyota Motor Corp. and the Honda Motor Co. in hybrid vehicles, recently opened a tech center in Japan dedicated to developing so-called green technologies. Additionally, the third largest Japanese automaker launched a hybrid last year. But the new hybrid licenses the technology from Toyota.



While consumer interest has rushed in gas-and-electric hybrid cars because of increasing fuel prices and global warming issues, Ghosn said that Nissan was serious about going one step further and introducing vehicles powered only by electricity. "If you have an efficient battery for a hybrid, why not go all the way and go for electric cars?" he said. "It has zero emissions of anything."

Electric cars were unsuccessful to catch on because they are costly, hard to recharge and travel limited distances. Still, several automakers are currently developing such vehicles for the mass market. Ghosn noted that Nissan was currently negotiating a deal to put a fleet of electric cars on the market.

As we await the results of the biggest US Presidential Election we have ever seen, I have found an interesting article on how car choice reflects how Americans vote.

Kelley Blue Book Market Research surveyed almost 12,000 US car owners and how they planned to vote in the election. They found that owners of larger trucks and traditional luxury cars are more likely to vote for John McCain, while owners of hybrids and station wagons are more likely to vote for Barack Obama.

Backers of Arizona senator McCain typically own American brands – GMC (61%), Chevrolet (60%), Buick and Dodge (58%). McCain voters are also more likely to drive luxury brands like Lexus and BMW.



Barack Obama followers prefer imported vehicles, with the most popular being the Mini with 70%, Subaru (61%) and Saab (59%).

McCain supporters are most likely to drive full size trucks and SUVs, while Obama voters drive station wagons, hatchbacks and hybrids.

Rick Wainschel from Kelley Blue Book said "Car ownership says a lot about a person, and can even be an indicator who they are likely to vote for”. I do agree with this to an extent. While all this data may seem like a sweeping generalisation, some of it does make sense.

Sales of domestic and large trucks (McCain) are higher in traditionally Republican ‘red’ states whilst import and hybrid owners are predominantly located in Democratic ‘blue’ states.

Wired Blog claims all American brands like GMC and Chevrolet, as favoured by McCain followers, represent a blue collar ethic and fit with McCain’s image as a war hero with years of experience.



Throughout the campaign, Obama has stressed the importance of renewable energy, so it’s not surprising that eco-conscious hybrid car owners would vote for him.

While in every street you'll find couple of travel agencies offering Sumos, Qualis and Indicas for rent, the number of car rental agencies who dare to give their machines on self drive is very very few. Also, driving is not considered a respectable job and drivers are treated at par with watchmen, cleaner and such other unskilled or semi skilled jobs. Many of us do not have an idea what self drive is and if that option is really available in India.
Advantages of Self drive:
1. You get an extra seat
2. If you enjoy driving, it will be better experience driving yourself
3. Some intercity highways are pretty good-one can enjoy driving.
4. It gives privacy
5. For long drives (3 days and more, for unlimited kms advantage), self drive (with daily rental + fuel expense) will be economical than chauffeur driven rental (Per km billing + daily driver fees) [I drove 1300 kms in 3 days and it did cost me around Rs 16100 including rental and fuel-if I had taken Skoda on regular chauffeur driven rental, it would have costed nearly twice that amount.]
Risks of taking a vehicle on Self drive:
1. Liabilities: If anything goes wrong you'll be answerable, and there're lot of things which can go wrong (vehicle break down, flat tyre, accidents, road blocks, getting lost and so on). In a chauffeur driven rental, you can enjoy the ride while the driver will be responsible for both driving and overall care taking of the vehicle. If the vehicle breaks down you can leave the driver and his vehicle and continue journey in another vehicle. (if possible) With self drive, a small incident can ruin all the fun.
2. Rental companies usually buy the cheapest available variant of a car and the vehicle may not have basic facilities. (The skoda Octavia I rented had an outdated cassette player, while mp3 player is a standard these days. The vehicle was 4-5 years old with lots of minor dents and scratches. Except front left, all 3 tyres were in almost worn out condition and hardly had any threads-all these spoiled my fun to some extent)
3. As per RTO norms vehicle given on self drive will have yellow numbers on black background. With Hertz sticker and this yellow number plate, rest of the road users take it as a

taxi and the driver is taken for granted as an experienced taxi driver. So you may not get the respect of a car owner and since your expertise as driver is taken for granted you won't get much consideration on the road either.



4. Driving in India is an art. Besides knowing how to drive you also need a strong mouth. When two vehicles touch each other, irrespective of whos fault it is, one driving the expensive vehicle is held guilty by default. You'll need a strong mouth (and muscle too, sometimes!) to survive an argument.

5. Not economical for short trips (2 days or less and for just a few hundred kms) (this one is a disadvantage-not a risk)

Is it advisable to take cars on self drive in India?

Unless otherwise you're tempted by the advantages of self drive listed above, and are comfortable with few risks listed, it is advisable Not to prefer self drive.

If you plan to take cars on self drive in India:

1. Take a car made by either Maruthi/Tata or Mahindra. These manufacturers have dealers all over India and if something goes wrong finding help will be easy. Other makers like Skoda, Chevy etc are yet to spread their dealership network and service centers.



2. Insist on a relatively new vehicle which is less than 2-3 years old and that vehicle should have relatively newer tyres.

3. Take a vehicle with high ground clearance. Most of the Indian roads will be in bad condition and may have unscientifically designed humps. Vehicle with low ground clearance will make driving tough.

4. Driving in India is not as easy as driving in other countries. Attributes for this are many-bad roads, irresponsible follow road users who might make unpredictable movements, lack of road sense, not having proper navigation facilities.

5. Consider keeping an Indian friend as co passenger (preferably one who knows local language and also knows driving)

6. Take rental from a reputed company. Some operators may resort to unethical practices like charging a huge amount even for a negligible scratch, handing over a vehicle which is in bad condition, refusing to reimburse you if you had to spend money replacing a faulty spare, renting out vehicles without genuine documents etc.

7. If you need to rent a vehicle for months, better to buy a second hand car, use it for few months and sell off again. Check with a used car dealer for this.

Social medicine, social environment, social thinking, and retraining for those that disagree is no more than thought and speech control. (Yes, people are now being punished for their thoughts in this country - personal experience). Crowded jails will not be a problem anymore, because death is not respected of humans anymore, so just kill those who don't agree.


The baby that could have "helped" to provide solutions for these "blown out of proportion" scientific findings may have been the one that just died before it had a chance to breath and add its carbon dioxide to this planet. The green tree, the dog and cat and bug, have more protective rights than the humans on this planet. I heard a warning once, when man starts to worship the creation instead of the creator, destruction will soon follow. We are there, my fellow Americans. Believe in God, or don't, a choice that each person makes. A belief in self, or not is a choice. There are ways to help our environment, without causing fear among people, where non is needed. Unless life for humankind is respected this "fear" will just become the destruction of people. Look at some of the science that shows the placement of this planet in the universe we know.



Man's nature to destroy is inborn. Man's ability to create - not gonna happen. Use of what we have at hand in this gluttonous society is just ignorant. If the rich environmentalists are that concerned - let them pay for it. - The people's money should be used for the promotion of the individual's ability to make good, moral right choices. This would promote good, right moral homes that in turn make good communities that, in turn, make good states that, in turn, will turn this country back into the God fearing nation that we were founded with. This is not a perfect world - if one does not like their station in life or where they live or how they live - choose to change it, but respect my right not too. Freedom is not making everyone happy, freedom is making the ability to choose to be happy present. As a mother, I would like to let Mr. Gore know that if a child had a fever a mother would take the child to the doctor; God being the Great Physician, does He not have the ability to provide corrective action if His people brought His planet's concerns to Him? Try it, you might find some answers.
